YOU WILL NEED
To complete your application you will need to know:
- Your postal address and the property address
- Your phone number and email address
- Your ABN number (if you have one)
- If the fencing is eligible for funding (see guidelines)
You will also need to upload supporting documentation. This is:
- A site photo – either of the completed fencing or the area you want to fence
- A map that clearly shows the location and extent of the fencing for which you are requesting funds
Once you have created a map in earth.google.com (instructions provided below) you will be able to use it to:
- estimate the length (m) of fencing
- estimate the area (ha) of fencing
CREATING THE MAP
We require a map that clearly shows the location and extent of the fencing for which you are requesting funds.
For the map we prefer if the file is a .kml file type. This file can be created in Google Earth. Note that you cannot upload a .kml file type within the SmartyGrants online application form. You will need to follow the instructions below.
There are two options for creating the map:
Use Option1: if you have a Google account or are happy to create one
or
Use Option 2: if you do not want to create a Google account.
Option 1: If you have a Google account or are happy to create one:
- Open your internet browser and go to earth.google.com
- Click on ‘Menu’ icon (three horizontal lines) at the top of the vertical toolbar on the left of the screen and select ‘Sign in’.
- This will take you to a sign in page for your Google account where you can enter your account details (eg. Email or phone number and password). You will then be taken back to Google Earth.
- Click on the ‘Search’icon (magnifying glass) in the vertical tab at the left of your screen and type in your address, then press Enter.
- This should take you to an aerial image of your property. To stop the map from automatically rotating close the small window on the right of the screenthat is displaying your address.
- Click on ‘Projects’ icon (placemarker) in the vertical toolbar at the left of the screen. Click on the blue ‘New project’ button. Select ‘Create project in Google Drive’.
- This will open an ‘Untitled Project’. Click on blue ‘New Feature’button and select ‘Draw line or shape’.
- You will be asked to select a starting point. By hovering over the map with your mouse and left-clicking you can select where to start drawing a line where your fence will go. You can hover your mouse and left click as many times as you need to make the shape of your fence. You can zoom in or out on the map using the ‘scroll wheel’ on top of your mouse. When you want to save the line or shape press ‘Enter’.
- Once you press ‘enter’ to save your shape a window will appear where you can give the project a name and then save the project by clicking the blue ‘Save’ button.
- Click on ‘Share project’icon (person) near the top of the page. In the 'Get Link' window choose the option 'Change to anyone with the link'. Click the ‘Copy link’ option.
- You can now paste this link into your SmartyGrants application form by right-clicking on the mouse and selecting the ‘Paste’ option.
Option 2: If you do not want to create a Google account:
- Open your internet browser and go to earth.google.com
- Click on the ‘Search’icon (magnifying glass) in the vertical tab at the left of your screen and type in your address, then press Enter.
- This should take you to an aerial image of your property. To stop the map from automatically rotating close the small window on the right of the screenthat is displaying your address.
- Click on the ‘Projects’ icon (placemarker) in the vertical tab at the left of your screen. Then click on the blue button that says ‘New project’. Choose the option ‘Create KML file’.
- You will be asked: ‘earth.google.com wants to store files on this device’. Click ‘Allow’

CALCULATING THE LENGTH AND AREA OF FENCING
You can also calculate both the length and area of your fencing in earth.google.com. To do this click on the 'Measure distance and area' icon (ruler) in the vertical tool bar down the left of the screen. Now hover the mouse over your fenceline. By hovering over the map with your mouse you will be asked to 'Select a starting point'. By left-clicking you can select where to start drawing a line where your fence will go. You can hover your mouse and left click as many times as you need to make the shape of your fence. The perimeter (length) and area of your fence will appear in a window on the right of the screen.

You can also click 'next page' or 'previous page' on the top or bottom of each page to move forward or backward through the application.
SAVING YOUR DRAFT APPLICATION
If you wish to leave a partially completed application, press 'save and close' and log out. When you log back in and click on the 'My Submissions' link at the top of the screen, you will find a list of any applications you have started or submitted. You can reopen your draft application and start where you left off.
You can also download any application, whether draft or completed, as a PDF. Click on the 'Download PDF' button located at the bottom of the last page of the application form.
SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION
You will find a Review and Submit button at the bottom of the Navigation Panel. You need to review your application before you can submit it.
Once you have reviewed your application you can submit it by clicking on 'Submit' at the top or bottom of the screen or on the navigation panel. You will not be able to submit your application until all the compulsory questions are completed and there are no validation errors.
Once you have submitted your application, no further editing or uploading of support materials is possible.
When you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation email with a copy of your submitted application attached. This will be sent to the email you used to register.
If you do not receive a confirmation of submission email then you should presume that your submission has NOT been submitted.
Hint: also check the email hasn’t landed in your spam or junk email folder.
ATTACHMENTS AND SUPPORT DOCUMENTS
You may need to upload/submit attachments to support your application. This is very simple, but requires you to have the documents saved on your computer, or on a storage device.
You need to allow enough time for each file to upload before trying to attach another file. Files can be up to 25MB each; however, we do recommend trying to keep files to a maximum of 5MB – the larger the file, the longer the upload time.
COMPLETING AN APPLICATION IN A GROUP/TEAM
A number of people can work on an application using the same log in details as long as only one person is working at a time. Ensure you save as you go.
SPELL CHECK
Most internet browsers (including Firefox v2.0 and above; Safari; and Google Chrome) have spell checking facilities built in – you can switch this function on or off by adjusting your browser settings.
